There are two types of swimming pool filter "elements": D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) and Cartridge, and both of these types of elements need to be "cleaned" periodically. And cleaned correctly! What happens is, during the pool season, the material of these elements become coated and clogged with algae, dirt, body oils, suntan lotion, and Calcium Carbonate (residue from Calcium Hypochlorite or "Granular Chlorine.") The coating is easy for any pool owner to remove; all they have to do is remove the element from their filter and simply rinse it off with their garden hose. But what's a little more challenging for a pool owner to remove is the clogged stuff. You have to clean the element chemically for this.
Have Us Clean Your Element in Our
X-TREME CLEAN FILTER MACHINE!!
Rinsing the filter alone WILL NOT remove the clogged stuff in the element. The element has to be cleaned in a degreaser chemical. Here, at our store, we have had many people come in with filtration problems. A lot of these problems were that the PSI of their filter is not staying in the "ideal range," (which is typically between 8 - 10 PSI for Cartridge Filters and 8 - 12 PSI for D.E. Filters.) The first thing we usually ask them is "When was the last time the element has been 'chemically' cleaned?" A lot of the responses are "I've rinsed the element like crazy and it looks clean." A lot of these pool owners even think the problem is that they need to buy a new element. Yes, the element may need to be replaced, but in most cases, it is just that these pool owners are simply misinformed about the proper way to clean the element. In most cases, after we have the pool owner "chemically" clean their element, or after we clean it for them in our "X-treme Clean Filter Machine," the PSI problem is solved, and their filter is working like new again.
Don't Just Rinse Your Element!
You Have To Have The Element Chemically Cleaned!!
Now, why in the world do we stress to the pool owner to have us chemically clean the element and not recommend having them clean it on their own? Believe it or not, but it has nothing to do about the money, and if you know us and our reputation, you'll know we are true in what we say. The reason we stress for us to clean the elements is that when we clean them, they come out extremely cleaner than when it is cleaned by the pool owner. The reason being is that in 2010, we manufactured what we now call the "X-treme Clean Filter Machine." It is a dual tank that can be described as a washing machine for pool filter elements.

Before 2010, we cleaned elements at our store like most of the other pool stores do--soak the elements overnight in a 35 gallon barrel filled with non-circulated water and chemical solution. By the way, this is also the same process the pool owner uses to clean their element. The problem with this is that you have to stir the mixture of water and chemical to keep the chemical consistently around the element. Degreaser chemicals are usually heavier than water and once you are done stirring, the chemical begins to drop to the bottom of the barrel and stay there. If you have ever cleaned the element yourself or had the element cleaned at a pool store and notice that the bottom of the element seems to look cleaner than the top, this is the reason why. With our X-treme Clean Filter Machine, the chemicals (more than just a degreaser, too) are constantly circulating in the tanks, causing the chemicals to be consistently around the complete element. With us, the elements not only "look" extremely clean, but they are extremely clean.

Not only is bringing in your element for us to clean easier than you cleaning it yourself, the element comes out better, and it does not cost that much more, compared to you buying the cleaning chemical for the job. Matter of fact, you will probably break even or even save money!
We charge between $35 - $55, depending on the size and amount of elements, for us to clean the elements in the X-treme Clean Filter Machine. If you want to clean the element yourself, you will need to purchase a "Filter Cleaner" chemical. You will pay $8 - $12 for a bottle, and one bottle only works in five gallons of water, so if you have a large filter, you'll need a larger barrel, and more than one bottle of cleaner. The better your element is cleaned, the less it needs to be cleaned and the longer the element will last. If you have us clean your element one time per year, your filter will filter better, your element will last 2 - 3 years longer (for Cartridges or D.E. Grids) or up to 10 years longer (for D.E. Fingers.) The costs of replacing these elements are not cheap either, so it is well worth not only properly cleaning your filter, but having us do it for you in the X-treme Clean Filter Machine!

The best time for you to bring in your filter element for cleaning is at the beginning of the season or at the end of the season.
